Sheepdog training or herding training?!
In recent years the term “herding” has started to creep into parts of the Australian sheepdog world. Many newcomers to working dogs simply don’t realize that this term has really originated in two places: the show dog world, and in America.
The show dog associations tend to talk about “herding”, whereas the true Australian sheepdog associations, trainers, stockmen and stockwomen, and farmers, never do – it is “sheepdog training” and “sheepdogs”, never “herding training” or “herding dogs”.
So to me it will always remain “sheepdogs” and “sheepdog training”, and never “herding”, in the true Australian tradition.
